Thanks for the mewithoutyou recommendation. This should have been on my radar, but at least now it is. The idea reminds me of Rumi, who talked about making your heart a temple of fire and burning away veils, etc. etc. Highly recommend his work.

I was also told once that "speaking in tongues" was a requirement for salvation, which is why I keep a framed copy of The Talking Heads, "Speaking in Tongues" on my wall.

(But no seriously, being told that also sent me on a crisis of faith, even though I didn't fully realize it at the time).

Great band. The whole discography is incredible and as a band they get better and better as the albums age with me.

I recently watched "Stop Making Sense." That was a treat.

I grew up Baptist, so something like speaking in tongues first came as a shock; here was something my denomination dismissed or considered trivial being front-and-centered. But more importantly, as the culture around me treated charismatic Christianity as "realer," it created a divide between those whom God would deign move through and those whom he would not (with me falling in the latter). Of course, this divide does not exist, but it was a powerful affront at the time.

I grew up in a similar culture but my first church experiences were pentecostal so I always felt more spiritual than all the baptists lol
